Coolsculpting is considered to be the premier non-invasive body contouring treatment in the United States. It’s also one of the few cosmetic procedures that permanently eliminates fat cells from your body, meaning that if you make the right lifestyle choices, it is possible to maintain your results for good.
Here’s what you need to know about Coolsculpting treatment, including what to expect, how long you’ll have to wait before you see your results and how you can maintain your new shape and appearance.
CoolSculpting is a non-invasive cosmetic procedure that is also sometimes referred to as cryolipolysis or fat-freezing. This is because the technique uses a key weakness of fat cells – the cold. When fat cells are frozen, they crystallize and die. Once they have been destroyed, the body can metabolize them, processing them out of the body through the usual inflammatory clearing processes. Once the fat cells have been eliminated from the body, they are gone forever.
CoolSculpting works by using controlled cooling, applying it to the area that you wish to target. CoolSculpting is FDA approved to treat:
CoolSculpting is applied to the body using a special applicator. There are no needles and there is no need for anesthetic. Patient can expect to feel intense cold, but this will quickly subside as the area numbs. You may also feel some sucking/pulling of the area as the CoolSculpting device draws fatty tissue into the applicator cup. There is no downtime and patients can return to most of their usual activities directly afterwards.
Patients who have undergone a Coolsculpting procedure may start to notice a visible reduction in fat in the targeted area in as little as 3 to 4 weeks. However, optimal results – where around 90% of the targeted fat cells have been removed - can usually be seen around 8 weeks following treatment. Following this, you may continue to notice small improvements for up to 6 months.
One of the biggest concerns of patients who have had CoolSculpting is that the fat that they have had eliminated from their body will grow back. This isn’t the case. Fat cells cannot multiple and so the body won’t create more fat cells to replace those which have been eliminated using CoolSculpting. However, remaining fat cells can become larger if the patient doesn’t maintain their weight. Exactly which fat cells enlarge as a result of weight gain can’t be predicted or controlled, so it’s recommended that patients ensure that they follow a healthy, balanced diet and get plenty of exercise to maintain their weight following their CoolSculpting procedure. This should keep existing fat cells the same size and enable patients to maintain the results of their procedure for as long as possible.
